The PLATFORMA FORUM to discuss fragile states, the new commitments of the EU and decentralised cooperation in times of crisisThe European Commission Communication and the Report of the Parliament on local and regional governments (LRGs) in development, as well as the new financing programmes for 2014-2020, will mark the renewed commitment of the European Union towards local authorities in the field of cooperation.
In this context, the Forum will allow to demonstrate the relevance of the action of local authorities for development, through exchanges on decentralised cooperation and the levers for action of LRGs in fragile states. Thus, in the presence of representatives of EU institutions, local and regional elected representatives will be able to express their expectations as to the future commitments of the EU.
The Forum will also be an opportunity for elected representatives and local staff to exchange views on the evolution of decentralised cooperation, at a time when the economic crisis places a serious budget pressure on local authorities.
The debates will be held on 4th and 5th March, in the presence of the mayors of Treicheville (Ivory Coast), Rabat (Morocco), Luxembourg and Palencia (Spain), of Corina Cretu (MEP), of Kristian Schmidt (DG DEVCO) representing Commissioner Piebalgs, and of the UCLG Secretary General. On the second day, the Forum will be held at the European Parliament.
