A key proposal coming from the 2013 CLGF Conference in Kampala was that 2014 should be designated as the Year of Developmental Local Government, so as to highlight the central role played by local government in economic and social development, as set out in the Kampala Declaration onDevelopmental Local Government and Munyonyo Statement on Local Government’s Role in the Post-2015 development agenda.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held in Colombo in November 2013, endorsedthe proposal (read the full statement). This high level political mandate will assist the local and regional governments of the Commonwealth in approaching their governments to support their own work and strengthen the efforts to ensure that the current UN discussion on post-2015 takes into account the role of local government.
