SKL International empowering local and regional governments in Ukraine

SKL International is implementing a three-year project for the “Support to Decentralisation in Ukraine” to further strengthen, capacitate and expand the powers of Ukrainian local and regional governments.

In close cooperation with local stakeholders, SKL International will implement activities in the pursuit of supporting and strengthening the national decentralisation and democratic processes, by further capacitating local and regional governments in view of improving delivery of public services and in taking on more responsibilities.

The project will foster cooperation between Swedish and Ukrainian counterparts and will aim to address the real needs and challenges, with regards to the local and national context. To this effect, SKL International will share experiences, provide training and organise study visits and peer-to-peer learning and will likewise provide practical support and expose local partners to relevant models and practices.

The SKL International project is part of a larger national initiative, adopted by the Ukrainian government in April 2014, which looks to reform the local government and the territorial organisation of the country, and which will guide the project’s main aims and activities.

The project was launched in 2014 and will run until December 2017 under the responsibility of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR). The project will be managed and implemented by SALAR daughter company, SKL International, in close collaboration with the Ukrainian Ministry of Regional Development, Construction and Municipal Economy and the Civil Society Institute. It is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
