The world at a glance

PLATFORMA celebrates “women and girls”, the March theme for the European Year for Development, and republishes the study “Social Inclusion and Gender at the Local Level – Challenges and supports in the Maghreb Region”.

This publication raises the question of gender and social inclusion at local level through two dimensions: a focus on the issues in the Maghreb region, and the financial support available for the region in this area. In this regard the publication addresses the strategy of the European Union in favour of equality between women and men in development cooperation.

The publication includes experiences of South - South cooperation - particularly between associations of women in Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and Algeria - and examples of decentralized cooperation between European local and regional governments and their partners in the South.

You will read about projects carried by the Agency for international cooperation of the Association of the Dutch municipalities (VNG International) in partnership with 12 municipalities in Tunisia, joint actions by the Conseil Général de l'Isère (France) and the Province of Azilal (Morocco) in support to women's cooperatives or even the training programme for women in Unions in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia supported by the Agency for the cooperation of the Catalonia region.
