Georgian local authorities and civil society: joint efforts to strengthen local governance

The National Association of Local Authorities of Georgia (NALAG), in collaboration with the Association of Local Democracy Agencies (ALDA), is carrying out a project to further reinforce the participation of civil society in local decision-making processes.

 

In the context of this project several trainings were held in Georgia, in the regions of Guria, Mtskheta, Racha-Lechkhumi, Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli. The three-days training, which gathered 34 Municipalities and 720 participants, addressed the topics of leadership, networking, training for trainers (TOT), capacity building among others.

 

Moreover, the training participants were introduced the new local self-government code of Georgia and its amendments which foresee the enhancement of the role of civil society in the local governance process.

 

From the 9th to the 13th of June, representatives of Georgian local governments, with the cooperation of NALAG and the Czech NGO AGORA, will visit the city of Litomer™ice in Prague to share ideas and experiences regarding local government challenges in Georgia and Czech Republic.  

 

In the end of June NALAG, with the collaboration of the Council of Europe and the EU, will hold a Conference dedicated to a presentation of the Programme Strengthening Institutional Frameworks for Local Governance. High level representatives from NALAG, officials from the Georgian Government, from the Congress of the Council of Europe and from the EU will take part in this event.
