Contribute to the future EU-ACP agreement!

What role for local and regional governments in the development of African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries? How can they contribute to peace and security? Can they help support the fight against gender discrimination?

These questions are at the heart of the consultation PLATFORMA’s Secretariat launched to hear the opinion of its members to answer the public consultation launched by the European Commission regarding the revision of the EU-ACP agreement (Cotonou Agreement).

In anticipation of its expiration in 2020, the European Commission has decided to revise this agreement. Fifteen years after its adoption, the goal is to take stock of key recent developments such as the newly launched 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Conference on climate change (COP21). The agreement regulates the relations between the EU and the 79 ACP countries in a variety of fields, from migration and trade to development cooperation.

WHAT’S ON THE TABLE FOR PLATFORMA AND ITS PARTNERS?

Until the 2010 revision, the agreement made little reference to the role of local and regional governments. The next programme is a great opportunity to push for greater recognition of their role in some of the most vital areas of this agreement, including local economic development, integration of migrants, or the fight against gender discrimination.

Local and regional governments, their partners and their associations are invited to share their comments and opinions on this consultation with PLATFORMA Secretariat by 15th of December (marine.gaudron@ccre-cemr.org).
