Swedish and Turkish municipalities are teaming up for gender equality!

The Turkish Union of Municipalities (UMT) organised in collaboration with the Swedish Associations of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR), and member of PLATFORMA, a two day workshop in Ankara on how to implement the European Charter for Equality.

The training offered a unique opportunity for the 16 Turkish municipalities that signed the Charter to gather and exchange experience on their work.

Participants were invited to reflect upon their work and share both good practices and challenges. Some of the main difficulties that municipalities mentioned were organisational issues, coordination and staff fluctuations related to change of political mandate. Other challenges related to the lack of gender disaggregated data.

Among the participants, Ann-Sofie Lagerkrantz from Kalmar municipality (Sweden) presented different methods on how to implement gender equality, in particular the strategy of gender mainstreaming. She also gave practical examples of initiatives from Sweden.

The workshop was organised in the framework of the project “TUSELOG”.

WHAT IS TUSELOG?

TUSELOG is a 4-year cooperation programme between Turkish and Swedish municipalities. The Turkish-Swedish Partnership for Local Governance aims at improving municipal practices in specific thematic areas such as gender equality, sustainable development, transparency and accountability etc.
