Hands off my EDF !

While discussions between the heads of states and governments on the European budget for 2014-2020 are in a deadlock, especially over the cohesion and CAP budgets, no Member State seems to be bothered by Herman Van Rompuy’s proposal to cut the EU’s external action budget, which includes development aid, by 7%. If this proposal is accepted, this would be proportionally the most important cut, as opposed to the ambitious proposals of the Commission. And this without taking into account the proposal of the Council President to cut even more deeply into the European Development Fund (solidarity instrument with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries): according to his proposal, less than 30 billion would be allocated to this instrument, as opposed to the initial proposal of 34 billion euros – an 11% cut! At present, it seems a miracle would be needed – or maybe just a little common sense? – so that the Member States don’t touch an essential element of international solidarity !
