MARCH-ING TOWARDS DEVELOPMENT

In the spirit of the European Year for Development and International Women’s Day, the month of March demonstrated that development cooperation and both the definition and the implementation of development policies must embody an inclusive process, involving women and youth at all levels of government. The importance of community empowerment and how women can contribute to local and regional development cannot be undermined. As reaffirmed within the context of the Beijing +20 campaign and by the Commission on the Status of Women, women’s empowerment is crucial to accomplish the objectives proposed by the Open Working Group: not only to fulfil Goal 5 but also to be able to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Local and regional governments will be key in ensuring that gender sensitive policy put an end to gender inequality, and to achieve the sustainable goals. The Policy Forum for Development and the debate on the financing for development with Commissioner Mimica provided the opportunity for LRGs to recall that any new development agenda will only have an impact on people’s lives if it is successfully implemented at the local level.
