Can Europe’s towns and regions help Libyan cities?

Libyan local authorities are painstakingly trying to mend what five years of conflict across the country have shattered. And to do this, they desperately need technical expertise from Europe’s towns and regions. This is where decentralised cooperation must show its added value, and this is exactly why PLATFORMA joined the Libya initiative set up within the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) and on the initiative of Nicosia municipality.

Summer break? What summer break?

July and August were busy weeks for PLATFORMA mostly to lay the groundwork for future events and initiatives. End of June we completed the work on the “Handbook for a successful project” on decentralised cooperation; it is already available in English and French, and the Italian, Spanish and German versions will soon come out to broaden its local and regional readership. Read more about it in the article on the left of this editorial.

We also reached out to others beyond PLATFORMA’s traditional “constituency”. Your secretariat held several meetings with the “Libya initiative” (see article) with the dual aim to help Libyan governments while making a concrete case for decentralised cooperation’s added value. We also organised a meeting with UNDP-ART’s team in Brussels to explore ways to enrich each other’s work in future (see short video on this issue).

Throughout summer, we also kept working on CONNECT (the match-making tool on local and regional expertise, watch video), analysed and prepared replies to European Commission’s documents on “development consensus” (how all aspects of EU policy are tied into development policy), EU’s external investment plan (see short video) and the “post Cotonou agreement”, while preparing PLATFORMA’s role and presence at the Nantes Climate Chance summit, UCLG congress in Bogota and the Habitat III summit in Quito to name but a few.

September has just knocked at the door. Your PLATFORMA network is ready for it!
