Poverty eradication, fighting against climate change or defending human rights… European cities and regions are actively engaged in global solidarity and they want to let their citizens know about it! To this end, the first edition of the European Days of Local Solidarity (EDLS) will take place from 12 to 24 November in 7 places in France, Italy, Latvia & Spain.

From a COP of commitments to the COP of solutions

Since COP21 last December, a lot has been achieved politically for climate: in less than one year, the Paris Agreement on climate has been adopted, ratified by 100 countries – including the main ones responsible for greenhouse gas emissions – and just entered into force on November 4th!

Cities and international cooperation had a strong voice at Habitat III

Only every 20 years, the UN gathers to discuss the future of cities. In October, more than 45,000 people participated in the Third UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (better known as Habitat III). The local governments delegation consisted of almost 2,000 representatives that made the local governments’ commitment to sustainable urban lives very present. The New Urban Agenda was formally adopted and makes more references to local governments’ role than ever before.

At Habitat III, the EU commits to increase support to city-to-city cooperation

“I am a big fan of city-to-city cooperation”, said EU Regional Policy Commissioner Corina Creţu when she presented the “EU's Voluntary Commitments” for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda during Habitat III conference yesterday in Quito.

When every leaf is a flower

Autumn has never been so fruitful! The voice of towns and regions has been heard at Bogota and Quito conferences, and the New Urban Agenda was adopted. But it’s now time to turn to its implementation and to link it to the “localization” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (see several articles in this newsletter).

PLATFORMA was also particularly active on the policy side, contributing to the hot debates on migration, the effectiveness of development cooperation and, above all, the Revision of the European Consensus on Development (see our “policy positions” section).

But Autumn is not over! COP22 just started. And we proudly launched the first edition of the European Days of Local Solidarity! Let’s discover more in this newsletter.

No doubt that “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” (Albert Camus)
