With the occasion of Rio +20, Regions United / FOGAR, in partnership with the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Climate Group, and Nrg4SD, co-organised the World Regions Summit, which was held on 19 June in Rio de Janeiro.

This event gathered heads of sub-state governments and concentrated on green economy and its functioning, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development, the measures and indicators for a new development model, and governance.

For Regions United / FOGAR, there is an urgent need of rethinking governance: this implies not only defining a political steering framework or a governance specific to sustainable development, but proposing a new world governance. In this respect, Regions United / FOGAR wishes to emphasize multi-level governance. At the end of the World Regions Summit, a Common Declaration aiming at concrete commitment for a green society was signed.
