Why sustainable urbanisation needs to be a pillar of the post-2015 Agenda

UCLG and its regional sections, among which the CEMR, call for the inclusion of a specific objective dedicated to ‘sustainable urbanisation’ in the post-2015 UN development programme.

The UN is searching for new development objectives. Several propositions have been put forth in domains such as gender equality and access to healthcare, for example. In order to ensure that the role of local and regional government is taken into account in the new development programme, UCLG calls on cities, municipalities and regions to support an awareness campaign to adopt a development agenda that includes sustainable urbanisation as an objective.

Including this objective in the post-2015 Agenda would not only allow local and regional authorities to strengthen their capacities, but it would also provide them with funds needed to confront the challenge of sustainable urbanisation. This assumes that cities and territories are in vital need of economic growth, which has to contribute to social equity, quality of the environment and territorial cohesion.

How to participate?

Cities, regions and associations are invited to participate in the campaign. To support the initiative and spread the message of local authorities to the international community, all it takes is signing the form and sending it to post-2015@uclg.org before 30 November 2013.
