European development days’ panel on fragile states, peace and security

PLATFORMA will be participating in the European Development Days 2013, organised by the European Commission on 26-27 November in Brussels. This year’s edition will focus on the post-2015 development framework.

PLATFORMA is organising, with Saferworld, Cordaid and Friends of Europe, an auditorium panel on the topic of fragile states, peace and security. The panel dubbed “Post-2015: Objective peace” will discuss how conflict and violence are obstacles to development in different contexts and what we can learn from responses so far, especially from the New Deal. Panelists will also reflect on how we can ensure that the post-2015 framework will effectively support sustainable peace and how the EU and other like-minded actors can promote this agenda in the next two years.

Boubacar Bah, mayor of the district V of Bamako and President of the association of municipalities of Mali will represent local and regional government’s view in the debate, and will give insights of local elected representatives’ actions during the crisis in Mali and their role in the reconstruction process.

Other speakers include Marcus Cornaro, Deputy Director General at the European Commission DG DEVCO, El Khidir Daloum, Director of programmes, Africa and MENA at Safeworld, Simone Filippini, Chief Executive Officer at Cordaid, Emilia Pires, Minister for Finance of Timor Leste, Chair of G7 and Member of the High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons advising the UN on the post-2015 global development agenda, Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Lida Nadery Hedayat, Deputy Chief of Party for USAID’s Land and Reform in Afghanistan (LARA) Project, Alex Thier, Assistant to the Administrator for Policy, Planning and Learning (PPL), USAID. The session will be moderated by Shada Islam, Director of Policy at Friends of Europe.

The panel will be held on Tuesday 26 November from 16.00 to 17.30. Visit eudevdays.eu for more information on the event.
